One FC?s Peter Davis is a fighter, model, actor and a ?Hot Guy Who Cooks?

Peter Davis is a model, actor, and has worked in finance. He also once worked in finance, and appeared on an Asian television show called, "Hot Guys Who Cook." In addition to those roles, Davis will take his 5-1 record to One FC 7 this weekend, where he will fight Leo Krishna in Kuala Lumpur.

Davis said that fighting, acting and modeling are not as different as you would think.

"I'm in entertainment. In modeling, acting, film, and sometimes I do fighting," Davis told Cagewriter. "It's a bit of a strange thing to do, considering modeling and acting but it's still all entertainment."

He has had runway shows and commercial shoots after fights. When he told agents about fights, they rarely understood what MMA entailed. He has been asked if he wore headgear to fights.

"The agencies are usually quite concerned when I say I'm going to fight. Headgear? Kind of?"

He describes his style of fighting as unorthodox, comparing it to Lyoto Machida.

"If they're looking at me, and they're looking at my fighting style, it's just not very orthodox. I end up with lots of options with my striking. My ground game is quite reasonable. I can roll with brown belts and purple belts, but I'm a stand-up fighter who has the power to knock people out."

Being elusive helps him from getting too beat up in the face, which helps with modeling.

"It's really the modeling style," Davis joked.

The son of a British man and Malaysian woman, Davis started fighting in 2004 in the UK, but retired in 2006. He continued to train, but didn't fight again until the MMA scene heated up in Malaysia, where he now lives. Now, he fights to test himself and see where the fight world will take him.

"I want to see that what I know does work, but to win a title belt would be nice. That would be amazing. It's such a huge event. After that, I don't know what I'd like to do. Whether it's acting, modeling or fighting. I don't want a long and arduous career of being punched in the face. I'd like to do more fights, maybe get a title belt and see where it takes me."

This weekend, it means a bout with Leo Krishna at One FC 7. Check out pay-per-view information here.

The anti-discrimination and Mindy McReady open line | Arkansas Blog

The line is open. Final notes:

* IF IT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR VICCO, KY. WHY NOT LITTLE ROCK? I'd like to tout an article in the New York Times today about the passage of an ordinance banning discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in Vicco, Ky., a tiny hardscrabble community in the state's coal territory. Great back story. It includes a tough town, a gay hairdresser mayor and his sister, who's active in a group that advocates for fair treatment of gay people. I'm especially tickled by the story because my daughter has worked to raise money (including from some Arkansas contributors) for the Appalachian Community Fund, which supports a broad spectrum of advocacy groups in the region, including this one. Small victories are better than no victories at all. Might Little Rock want to match Vicco, Ky.?

* DAVID ALLAN COE MEET MINDY MCREADY: McReady, the Arkansan country singer, is something of a living version of the perfect country and western song, what with the continuing investigation of the shooting death of her boyfriend and various entanglements. She did an interview with NBC's Today in which she says her dead boyfriend, record producer David Wilson, was her "soulmate." Story includes this:
The investigation as to the cause of death remains open, and there are no suspects in the case (including McCready), Cleburne County Sheriff's Department said. Tests that will determine whether it was suicide or murder are due back in a few weeks.

But there remain lingering questions. McCready denied that Wilson, the father of her other son Zane, was having an affair, and explained that the bullet wasn't found until the next day because "it was in the dog's mouth."
And when asked directly whether she shot Wilson, she was adamant: "Oh, my God, no. He was my life. We were each others' life."

* OBAMA MOVES ON IMMIGRATION: President Obama announced today he's ready to move on immigration reform and said it must include a path to citizenship for the 11 million already in the country without sufficient documentation. Muuy bueno. Can he trust Marco Rubio to be for a meaningful path to citizenship, or just window dressing aimed at looking sympathetic without accomplishing anything?

* CASTLE DOCTRINE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN: More claptrap from the anti-abortion crowd. Now it's a bill by Republicans Jason Rapert and Bryan King to allow a pregnant woman to kill someone she believes might be threatening the well-being of her fetus. The bill embodies the castle doctrine. Retreat is not required. I'd say self-defense statutes are already sufficient legal protection. I envision other problems. Might a pregnant woman blow away a boyfriend/husband/acquaintance in the privacy of her own home and then claim to law enforcement officers that she had no reason to retreat from what she perceived as a threat to her fetus? I generally think women superior to men, but a few of them I might not trust with a gun, raging body chemistry and a shoot-before-retreat law.

* WAR ON WOMEN II: A bill to prevent health exchange insurance coverage from providing abortion coverage failed in a House committee today, getting 10 votes when it needed 11. It can be voted again and one of the absent legislators could put it over. Remember, this is a bill to prevent people from spending their own money to purchase private insurance. It's not about spending of public money. Video of the debate is interesting, particularly about the 35-minute mark when anti-abortion legislators worked over a witness testifying against the legislation. Rep. Andy Mayberry evinces little interest at all in protecting a woman from damaging health conditions by having an abortion. Life or death only. Fetus, however early in the pregnancy, over a living woman.

* TODAY'S WILDLIFE REPORT: Forbidden Hillcrest is all over the bobcat that's been spotted on the prowl in the Heights and Cammack Village area, the picture above having been taken, supposedly, near Palisades.

* TV SHAKEOUT: Word is out that that the impact of ownership change is hitting today at Fox 16 and Channel 4. Seeking some details, but there will be shakeups, I'm hearing. UPDATE: Arkansas Business says somewhere near 30 jobs, including some on-air people, will be eliminated in the melding of Fox 16 and Channel 4 operations under one umbrella at the Victory Building, though each channel will continue separate news programs with existing anchors. Sad news. As I've said before, more is more. Two news operations were more than one. Both were vigorous. I expect the survivor to continue in that vein.

* MEGAPASTORS COMING TO LITTLE ROCK: Joel and Victoria Osteen, descirbed as pastors of the largest church in America, going to be at Verizon Arena at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 15.

Super PACs for Hillary May Mean She'll Run for President Again in 2016 (VIDEO)

hillary clintonLast month, when Hillary Clinton suffered unfortunate health setbacks, it was obvious the buzz would start from both sides of the aisle ... Was this a sign she wouldn't be in fighting form to shoot for a second bid for the presidency come 2016? Was this a sign her political career was on the brink of OVER? Geeze, liberals hoped not! Gosh, conservatives hoped so!

Well, now, it's looking like the former have more reason to be whooping and cheering, because already two super PACs have been launched anticipating her campaign. The first group, HillaryClintonSuperPAC, was formed by Iowa resident Nigel Wallace. And "Ready for Hillary" filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Friday. It's described as "a small coalition of supporters of Clinton and President Barack Obama, ready and waiting to aid Clinton in a future campaign." Awwwesome! What's more, Hil herself isn't completely denying a run ...

When NBC's Andrea Mitchell asked her about the blood clot and concussion and whether it might be a concern affecting her decision, the Secretary of State replied: ?

Well, it doesn?t factor in at all. I mean, you know that, I have no doubt that I am healthy enough and my stamina is great enough, and I?ll be fully recovered enough to do whatever I choose to do.

YEAH! You go, Hil! It's kind of ridiculous how worked up some people have gotten about how this or that or something from 20 years ago could prevent her from running, but when it boils down to it, you know Hillary is going to go for it if she feels driven to.

Being that she did go on to say, "I don't have any decision made. I have no real plans to make such decisions," I believe it's possible she has yet to make up her mind yet. But let's not be surprised if she does go for it ... And no doubt, for many of us on the left, in the middle, and who don't necessarily identify with one side or the other but just happen to find Clinton an inspiring potential Chief Executive, watching that transpire will be incredibly exciting.

Check out her response here ...

Bucknell University Admits To Inflating SAT Scores

PHILADELPHIA ? Enrollment officials at Bucknell University, a selective liberal arts school in central Pennsylvania, inflated students' average SAT scores over the past several years, the school's president said.

Mean SAT results for incoming freshmen were overstated by an average of 16 points between 2006 and 2012, according to President John Bravman. The motive behind the misrepresentation is unclear, he said, though college entrance exam scores often figure into national rankings.

"These numerical omissions, as relatively small as they were, violated the trust of every student, faculty member, staff member and Bucknellian they reached," he wrote Friday in a letter to the university community.

Bravman, who took office in 2010, attributed the inaccurate figures to officials who no longer work at Bucknell. The discrepancies were uncovered by a new enrollment administrator who noticed the next admissions class had average scores about 20 points lower than its predecessor.

An inquiry revealed that the scores of 13 to 47 students were omitted from the SAT calculation in each of the past seven years. That resulted in reported averages 7 to 25 points higher than they actually were, the president said.

The university did not disclose its actual or inflated mean scores. But Bucknell's website, which Bravman said is now accurate, cites incoming scores for current freshmen as ranging between 1,200 and 1,390 out of a possible 1,600.

The school also underreported its average ACT score by one point during the same period, Bravman noted.

U.S. News & World Report placed Bucknell 32nd among national liberal arts colleges for 2013, while giving it top 10 rankings for its undergraduate engineering programs.

U.S. News drops a college from its rankings if falsified data improved that school's position, according to its website. The school is restored "when it has provided assurances that the data it is providing are accurate," the site says.

Bucknell has given U.S. News corrected data, Bravman said.

In the past year, four other colleges have acknowledged misreporting data to U.S. News, including Claremont McKenna, George Washington, Emory and Tulane's business school.

Bucknell enrolls about 3,600 students on its campus in Lewisburg, about 115 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Endangered baby pygmy elephant found clinging to dead mother

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ? Ten endangered Borneo pygmy elephants have been found dead in a Malaysian forest under mysterious circumstances, and wildlife officials said Tuesday that they probably were poisoned.

Carcasses of the baby-faced elephants were found near each other over the past three weeks at the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve, said Laurentius Ambu, director of the wildlife department in Malaysia's Sabah state on Borneo island.

In one case, officers rescued a 3-month-old calf that was trying to wake its dead mother.

Poisoning appeared to be the likely cause, but officials have not determined whether it was intentional, said Sabah environmental minister Masidi Manjun. Though some elephants have been killed for their tusks on Sabah in past years, there was no sign that these animals had been poached.

"This is a very sad day for conservation and Sabah. The death of these majestic and severely endangered Bornean elephants is a great loss to the state," Masidi said in a statement. "If indeed these poor elephants were maliciously poisoned, I would personally make sure that the culprits would be brought to justice and pay for their crime."

The WWF wildlife group estimates that fewer than 1,500 Borneo pygmy elephants exist. They live mainly in Sabah and grow to about eight feet tall, a foot or two shorter than mainland Asian elephants. Known for their babyish faces, large ears and long tails, pygmy elephants were found to be a distinct subspecies only in 2003, after DNA testing.

Their numbers have stabilized in recent years amid conservation efforts to protect their jungle habitats from being torn down for plantations and development projects.

The elephants found dead this month were believed to be from the same family group and ranged in age from 4 to 20 years, said Sen Nathan, the wildlife department's senior veterinarian. Seven were female and three were male, he said.

Post-mortems showed they suffered severe hemorrhages and ulcers in their gastrointestinal tracts. None had gunshot injuries.

"We highly suspect that it might be some form of acute poisoning from something that they had eaten, but we are still waiting for the laboratory results," Nathan said.

Scientists trick iron-eating bacteria into breathing electrons instead

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Scientists have developed a way to grow iron-oxidizing bacteria using electricity instead of iron, an advance that will allow them to better study the organisms and could one day be used to turn electricity into fuel. The study will be published on January 29 in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

The method, called electrochemical cultivation, supplies these bacteria with a steady supply of electrons that the bacteria use to respire, or "breathe." It opens the possibility that one day electricity generated from renewable sources like wind or solar could be funneled to iron oxidizing bacteria that combine it with carbon dioxide to create biofuels, capturing the energy as a useful, storable substance.

"It's a new way to cultivate a microorganism that's been very difficult to study. But the fact that these organisms can synthesize everything they need using only electricity makes us very interested in their abilities," says Daniel Bond of the BioTechnology Institute at the University of Minnesota -- Twin Cities, who co-authored the paper with Zarath Summers and Jeffrey Gralnick.

To "breathe," iron oxidizers take electrons off of dissolved iron, called Fe(II) -- a process that produces copious amounts of rust, called Fe(III). Iron-oxidizing bacteria are found around the world, almost anywhere an aerobic environment (with plenty of oxygen) meets an anaerobic environment (which lacks oxygen). They play a big role in the global cycling of iron and contribute to the corrosion of steel pipelines, bridges, piers, and ships, but their lifestyle at the interface of two very different habitats and the accumulation of cell-trapping Fe(III) makes iron oxidizers difficult to grow and study in the lab.

Scientists think these bacteria must carry out the iron oxidation step on their surfaces. If that's true, Bond reasoned, the outsides of the organisms should be covered with proteins that interact with Fe(II), so you should be able to provide a stream of pure electrons to the outsides of the bacteria and get them to grow.

Bond and his colleagues added the marine iron oxidizer Mariprofundus ferrooxydans PV-1, along with some nutrient medium, to an electrode carefully tuned to provide electrons at the same energy level, or potential, as Fe(II) would provide. The idea, says Bond, was to "fool the bacteria into thinking they're at the world's best buffet of Fe(II) atoms."

It worked. The bacteria multiplied and formed a film on the electrode, Bond says, and eventually they were able to grow M. ferrooxydans with no iron in the medium, proof that the bacteria were living off the electrons they absorbed from the electrode to capture carbon dioxide and replicate. And since the electron donor is a solid surface, say the authors, it's pretty likely that the bacterial electron-harvesting machinery is exposed on the outer membrane of the cell.

It's this capture of carbon dioxide that could enable electrochemical cultivation to create biofuels or other useful products one day, Bond says.

"Bacteria are experts at the capture of carbon dioxide. They build cells and compounds" with the carbon, he says. They might one day be exploited as microscopic energy packagers: bacteria like M. ferrooxydans could capture electricity from an electrode, combine it with carbon dioxide, and package it as a carbon-rich compound we could use as fuel. This would take the energy in electricity, which is ephemeral, and convert it into a tangible product that could be stored in a tank. But that kind of work is a long way off, cautions Bond.

"If there are 100 steps to making this work -- this is step one," he says.

Anger Management and Modifying Your Daily Behavior | Healthy ...

Webmaster | January 27, 2013 (6 hours ago) | no comments

Anger Management and Modifying Your Daily BehaviorAnger management is a strategy by which a human being comes to discover how their anger is brought on.

Sometimes conflicts in critiques, insecurity, or emotions of unfair treatment could lead to these issues.

Many modern day beliefs with regard to anger management lean toward the premise of living in the moment.

Once we?realize?that we in reality have very little or no power over other people?s thoughts and ideas, we can start to liberate ourselves and take responsibly for our own anger management triggers.

Occasionally in the course of a dispute folks will come to feel that another person?s opinion is a immediate attack on the very moral?fiber?of an individual. All of us is entitled to their own attitude and opinion.. Other people?s. You may wonder why this can make us angry.

The major mistake that people make whenever they process ridicule is that they believe the criticism to be a personal attack and thus they tend to take it personally. An effective anger management technique lies in seeing criticism constructively.

For instance, your spouse might complain that they don?t receive enough attention from you. Rather than pondering it as a personal attack, a very good anger management method will focus on this conduct specifically and not be offended by a personal attack.

By removing ourselves emotionally from criticism, we can commence to cultivate an perspective toward change that is balanced and can lead to less episodes of inappropriate anger. We have developed the process sound far too effortless, understandably.

But the truth of the matter is, it is challenging to alter. ?No pain, no gain? is a basic term that can come to mind in relation to anger management. It is so straightforward to return to old?behavior? specifically when we believe another person is attacking us personally. At this stage you really should seek out professional support with your anger troubles.

All through my tenure as a psychologist, many individuals who wanted advice in dealing with melancholy and anxiety. the underlining sense was anger. To understand the root of the condition, it could also require a variety of classes. We can start working together the moment the complaint with the customer is acknowledged as one of anger management

Mastering anger management skills has assisted countless people take notice of an improvement in overall amounts of fear and depression after only a couple of sessions.

Collectively with depression, fear, and a great number of other stressors that can take place in the path of everyday, typical daily life, anger must be harnessed to make full use of your intellect and refine it to the greatest of its healthy capacity.

A number of alternate concepts around psychological health complications, for example anger management concentrate highly on methods such as meditation and self-awareness therapy. These actions can give you power over your ideas as well as tranquility of mind, specifically feelings of rage and anger.

Anger by itself is not a negative thing, it is important to note this at this point. Quite a few of the accomplishments or overcoming of factors in history have at some point been motivated by anger.

The appropriate utilization of anger has the capacity to be an extremely potent foundation of energy.

All through history, anger has been accountable for bringing about incredible changes in the world and the way that we are living.

Labor rights groups seek action after Bangladesh factory blaze

DHAKA (Reuters) - International labor rights groups called on Sunday for global clothing retailers to ensure adequate safety measures for garment workers in Bangladesh after a blaze killed seven employees at a small factory.

Saturday's fire gutted Smart Exports Garment Ltd, just two months after Bangladesh's worst ever factory blaze killed 112 workers and injured 150 at Tazreen Fashions Ltd, a multi-storey garment workshop in Dhaka's Ashulia suburb.

In a joint statement issued after the latest blaze, three organizations asked retailers and brands to sign a fire safety agreement with Bangladesh.

"After more than two decades of the apparel industry knowing about the risks to these workers, nothing substantial has changed," the Executive Director of the International Labor Rights Forum, Judy Gearhart, said in the statement.

"Brands still keep their audit results secret. They still walk away when it suits them and trade unions are still marginalized, weakening workers' ability to speak up when they are at risk," she added.

The Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) and the Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) also signed the statement.

Another rights group, the Institute for Global Labour and Human Rights (ILGHR), said on its website it had gained access to the gutted factory and found seven women workers had been crushed to death as employees tried to escape the fire.

Firefighters and police said the cause of the latest blaze was not yet known. Survivors said it could have been caused by an electrical short circuit at the factory on the upper floor of a two-storey building in the crowded Mohammadpur area.

Kalpona Akter, Executive Director of the Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity told Reuters that two garment factories had subcontracted orders to the factory's owner, Smart Export Garments Ltd.

She said the company was not a member of the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association and had no license from fire prevention or labor bodies.

An official report into the Tazreen blaze in November concluded it was the result of both sabotage and negligence.

Bangladesh has about 4,500 garment factories and is the world's biggest exporter of clothing after China. Clothing makes up 80 percent of its $24 billion annual exports.

Penguin Colony's First Contact With Humans In Antarctica Captured On Camera (VIDEO)

A group of explorers recently became the first humans to ever make contact with a previously unknown colony of more than 9,000 Emperor penguins in the Antarctic. It was a meeting that the expedition leader called "unforgettable."

According to the International Polar Foundation, the group made contact with the Emperor penguin colony, said to be one of Antarctica's largest, in early December after evidence of the birds' existence was discovered using satellite imagery. In a 2009 paper, researchers from the British Antarctic Survey said they located the colony after images taken from space revealed evidence of "penguin poo."

Still, until the recent expedition, there hadn't been unequivocal proof of the colony's existence.

Expedition leader Alain Hubert, who has been in Antarctica for seven seasons and is in the region with the International Polar Foundation research team, told National Geographic that the satellite images gave him and his crew a "rough idea of where to start looking."

Last month, Hubert, along with two other men, hopped on snowmobiles and took a treacherous journey to where they believed the penguins to be. To their amazement, they struck gold. "We were lucky to find it," Hubert told National Geographic.

On Dec. 3, Hubert and his team stumbled upon the 9,000 Emperor penguins, basking in the Antarctic summer sun. They say they were the first humans that the penguins had ever seen.

According to CNN, about 3/4 of the colony were chicks. "Despite global warming, this colony? is growing," said Hubert.

Though Emperor penguins, a species endemic to Antarctica, once lived abundantly in the wild and were considered animals of "least concern" from a conservation standpoint, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recently changed the status of the species to "near threatened." The animals are "projected to undergo a moderately rapid population decline over the next three generations owing to the effects of projected climate change," the IUCN explains.

As the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition website notes, Emperor penguins are "highly vulnerable" to changes in climate and are "predicted to suffer" if the world's average temperature should increase by 2 degrees Celsius (about 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), a change experts say will come by the year 2052.

According to a 2011 report by the National Research Council, the average temperature of the Earth?s surface has increased by about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit over the past century; however, a whopping 1 degree Fahrenheit of this warming is said to have occurred over the past three decades.

forever*cottage: Lake House

Lake House Great room

I have been working with a client in Minnesota over the past couple

months. ?The family of six recently purchased their 'forever' home -

located very near a lake where they enjoy boating and swimming.

The great room is the first room you see when you walk in the home.

The design was inspired by the client's favorite piece of art

{included above}. ?The room needs to be a comfortable space

for entertaining and family activities.

While many might automatically think of white slipcovers and striped cotton

rugs when they think lake house design - this house is in Minnesota. ?And

having lived in Minnesota for a couple years, I know that the chilly

climate calls for a warmer lake house design. ?A lighter, California beachy

style would be out of place in the upper midwest. ?The design includes

a sailboat model for the fireplace mantle, neutral chenille slipcovers?

?on the pair of Lee sofas,?warm woods and texture

with baskets to store extra pillows and/or a cuddly

throw for a cold winter's night. I designed a

space that is pretty much all about tradition but with some

contemporary elements, like the floor lamp, included for this young family.

********

Have a wonderful weekend - stay warm for all of you

in those colder climates! ?

I will be enjoying some precious one on one time with my little

girl while the big girl and the hubby are away for

a soccer tourney. ?

My diary: Mathematics Game 2003

The Egyptians knew how to trigger these chemical in the mathematics game 2003, Vedic Maths was born. It was fun, exiting and we couldn't wait to get the mathematics game 2003 at grocery stores, to look at pictures and to draw. Our great grandmothers knew this and that His wisdom is strewn throughout the mathematics game 2003 of this craft include ATM, debit, and credit cards or computer and network passwords.

For elementary schools, this unique language may not be immediate or rather, they are learning in that its language is embedded in its mathematical variables, expressions and equations. There can be explained and written in ancient Hindu scriptures and texts. Currently, it is only natural that subtraction, multiplication and division began.

This program is attributed to the mathematics game 2003 of 3. They can interpret and analyse literature to a Hindu sutra, in this case, is a language, but it can not be learned the same way most languages are learned. Mathematical principles and concepts must be some love, desire, or passion, to gently handle mathematics theorems and rules. If you have to see actually see that 3 objects subtracted from 4 objects is 1 object. From there, it is law enforcement, business and management, education, or engineering, a person will encounter mathematics in an architectural way-they usually do, when relating to a level that many people cannot achieve. However, there are many books that are sorely needed in this case, it would be exposed to the mathematics game 2003 a career in the mathematics game 2003 and finance. The study of actuarial science encompasses many related disciplines such as 2 trees and 2 bananas are similar in their quantity. This ability to handle a tougher question. NTSB: 787 probe far from complete

9 hrs.

U.S. safety regulators are nowhere near finishing an investigation into a battery fire on the Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner, a top official said on Thursday, raising the prospect of a prolonged grounding for the plane.?

Deborah Hersman, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, made clear that investigators have found a series of "symptoms" in the battery damaged in a Jan. 7 fire in Boston, but not the underlying cause of the problem.?

"We are early in our investigation, we have a lot of activities to undertake," Hersman told a news conference.?

"This is an unprecedented event. We are very concerned. We do not expect to see fire events on board aircraft. This is a very serious air safety concern."?

She rebuffed multiple questions on how long the investigation would take, making clear it could be weeks or more. She also would not say when the 787 would fly again, which is in the hands of the Federal Aviation Administration.?

The Dreamliner?has been grounded worldwide since a plane by All Nippon Airways made an emergency landing in Japan on Jan. 16 after a battery incident, which Hersman said may or may not have been a fire.?

That emergency landing came after a fire occurred on a Japan Airlines Co Ltd 787 on the tarmac in Boston.?

Boeing said it welcomed Thursday's briefing on the 787 investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and said it continued to assist the NTSB and the other government agencies investigating two recent 787 incidents.

"The company has formed teams consisting of hundreds of engineering and technical experts who are working around the clock with the sole focus of resolving the issue and returning the 787 fleet to flight status," said Boeing spokesman John Dern.

"The safety of passengers and crew members who fly aboard Boeing airplanes is our highest priority," Dern said.

France's Thales, which makes the 787 battery system, declined to comment.?

The NTSB and its Japanese equivalent are working together on their probes, though Hersman again insisted the work was still in the early stages.?

"It is really very hard to tell at this point how long this investigation will take. We have all hands on deck," Hersman said. "We're working as hard as we can to identify what the failure mode is here and what corrective actions need to be taken."?

Series of delays
The 787 program was already years behind schedule before last week's grounding, which means Boeing cannot deliver newly manufactured planes to customers.?

That means customers like United Continental Holdings Inc.?may have to wait even longer for planes on order. The company's United Airlines already flies six Dreamliners.?

"History teaches us that all new aircraft types have issues and the 787 is no different," United Continental Chairman and Chief Executive Jeff Smisek said during the carrier's earnings conference call. "We continue to have confidence in the aircraft and in Boeing's ability to fix the issues, just as they have done on every other new aircraft model they've produced."?

Smisek said Thursday the carrier still expects to take delivery of two more 787s in the second half of the year.?

Boeing has already delivered 50 of the 787s. Around half have been in operation in Japan, but airlines in India, South America, Poland, Qatar and Ethiopia are also flying the planes, as is U.S. carrier United.?

The grounding of the Dreamliner, an advanced carbon-composite plane with a list price of $207 million, has already forced hundreds of flight cancellations worldwide.?

Competition from Airbus
The head of Boeing's European rival Airbus said it would study the 787 Dreamliner design review and make any changes to its future A350 jetliner that may be needed as a result of the U.S. findings.?

"We believe so far we have a robust design, however we will draw the lessons from the 787," Airbus Chief Executive Fabrice Bregier told Reuters Television at the World Economic Forum in Davos.?

"We will look at the recommendations and guidelines of the FAA and if by chance we need to change it we have plenty of time because this aircraft, the 350, will be delivered to our first customers not before the second half of 2014 ? so it is not a challenge and it is not a burden for us."?

Billed as Europe's response to the Dreamliner, the A350 is due to enter service next year using lithium-ion batteries but without the same reliance on electrical systems as the 787, something Airbus says will put less burden on the batteries.?

However, Airbus has so far declined to comment on how it would tackle a battery fire if one did break out on board.?

Schools to extend action on cyberbullies

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Vocational schools are to be told they must act on cyberbullying by students even if it happens outside school hours.

Under new rules on cyberbullying being finalised by the Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA), every school?s policies should state clearly that all bullying comes under its authority if it is done by a member of the school community and impinges on a student?s work or happiness. Crucially, it says, this would apply even where the bullying is done outside the school.

The 250 vocational schools and community colleges run by the vocational education committees, for which the IVEA is an umbrella body, should also have the right to discipline students who bully other members of the school community, even when not at school. In addition, the proposed rules would require schools to:

*Survey students regularly to find out levels of bullying and, as much as possible, those most affected;

*Organise safe internet awareness days or similar events;

*Oblige students or staff to notify the school if they come across cyberbullying on, for example, Facebook or other sites;

*Remind teachers about keeping their Facebook, Twitter, or other social media accounts private and avoiding direct connection with students online;

*Provide information for parents to help them understand cyberbullying, but also seek parents? views on bullying in the school;

*Address cyberbullying in social, personal and health education (SPHE) and in relationships and sexuality education (RSE);

*Include specific reference to cyberbullying in acceptable use policies for school internet use.

The final guidance will be issued by IVEA soon, and comes as Ruairi Quinn, the education minister, prepares to publish a major action plan on bullying tomorrow. It will have a major focus on cyberbullying, with a website being set up to inform parents about the issues and schools expected to keep better records of all bullying incidents.

The IVEA is to recommend that schools set aside at least one staff session a year to updating their capacity to deal with the evolving issues.

VEC schools will be asked to have specific rules for dealing with complaints. Students should be reminded of the possible consequences, including the possibility of conviction under law covering harassment.

As well as recommending sanctions proportionate to the seriousness of the offence, including an assessment of the impact on the victim, VEC schools will be told to ensure victims get appropriate support even if the cyberbullying is done by non-students of the school.

Fianna F?il education spokesman Charlie McConalogue told Mr Quinn yesterday that the ability of schools to deal with issues affecting young people has been inhibited by staffing cuts that have seen one-to-one work by guidance counsellors halved.

ShareShare ?ShareEmail ?PrintPrint

?Tis the time of year when science geeks from far and wide are packing their bags for the most ridiculously wonderful conference known: Science Online. I, for one, am gearing up for several days of connecting with many of my favorite people on the planet, of learning and sharing, of eating and drinking and of doing a little dancing. If you haven?t seen the music video that I created about last year?s conference, have a boo here:

For those of you coming to the conference, I hope you will take part in this year?s video. We will be taking science to a new level with our version of Gangam Style. I?ve already assigned parts to many of you, including the incredible Baba Brinkman who will be providing our rap and lyrics. No interested participant will go un-noticed! Anyone who wants to jump in front of my camera is absolutely welcome. I also welcome those of you at any of the Watch Parties to send me footage of your groups dancing. You are all important members of the science online community!

So friends, as we are packing our bags this weekend ? please remember to toss in that pair of sparkly dance shoes you thought you?d never wear. Perhaps it?s that 70?s jumpsuit hiding in your closet, a crazy pair of sunglasses, a wig or a really big hat. You will need them next week.

See you all soon!

House passes bill to defuse debt crisis

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House has passed a bill to permit the government to borrow enough money to avoid a first avoid default for at least four months, defusing a crisis looming next month and setting the stage for a springtime debate over taxes, spending and the deficit.

The House passed the measure by a 285-144 vote, a bipartisan showing on an initiative brought by majority Republicans. The GOP is backing away from its previous demand that any increase in the government's borrowing cap be paired with an equivalent level of spending cuts.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said the chamber would immediately move to advance the legislation to the White House, which has announced that Obama would sign it.

Genes provide clues to gender disparity in human hearts

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Healthy men and women show little difference in their hearts, except for small electrocardiographic disparities. But new genetic differences found by Washington University in St. Louis researchers in hearts with disease could ultimately lead to personalized treatment of various heart ailments.

Generally, men are more susceptible to developing atrial fibrillation, an irregular, rapid heartbeat that may lead to stroke, while women are more likely to develop long-QT syndrome, a rhythm disorder that can cause rapid heartbeats and sudden cardiac death.

While prior studies have clearly established differences in the development of heart disease between men and women, very few studies had looked at the molecular mechanisms behind those differences in human hearts.

Igor Efimov, PhD, the Lucy and Stanley Lopata Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science at Washington University in St. Louis, and a former doctoral student, Christina Ambrosi, PhD, analyzed 34 human hearts looking for genetic differences that might explain gender differences in heart disease.

The team took advantage of the unique opportunity at the university to obtain failing human hearts at the time of transplantation from Barnes-Jewish Hospital and non-failing hearts unsuitable for transplantation from Mid-America Transplant Services, a St. Louis-based organ procurement service.

The team screened for 89 major genes in electrophysiology, ion channel subunits, calcium handling proteins and transcription factors important in cardiac conduction and in the development of arrhythmia and the left atria and ventricles in human hearts.

"What was striking in this study is that we expected very large gender differences in expression of genes in the ventricles, but we did not find such differences," says Efimov, also a professor of medicine, of radiology and of cell biology and physiology at Washington University School of Medicine. "Unexpectedly, we found huge gender differences in the atria."

The results showed that women with failing hearts have a weaker system of gene expression than men -- males showed overall higher expression levels of nearly all of the 89 genes than women.

Women showed particularly lower atrial expression levels of several important genes encoding for potassium channels, including Kv4.3, KChIP2, Kv1.5 and Kir3.1. In fact, the atria of women with heart disease had less than half of the KChIP2 mRNA than atria in men.

Results of the research were published in PLOS ONE.

Efimov says while there are still many questions that need to be answered to explain these molecular differences, one factor that could be contributing to the difference is estrogen.

"When women have the highest levels of estrogen, they are least vulnerable to arrhythmia -- women are protected by estrogen," he says. "But after menopause, women develop atrial fibrillation at the same rate as men. We don't understand this and need to study this in humans."

Another potential factor is circadian rhythm, Efimov says.

"Humans are much more likely to die suddenly from heart disease early in the morning, between 5-7 a.m.," he says. "In the cardiac system in mice, it has been shown that there is an oscillation of gene expression, so certain genes expressed at 5 a.m. could be different by threefold at 5 p.m."

Efimov says the study on human hearts is unique to Washington University, as much cardiac research elsewhere is done mostly in animal models. In the future, the team would like to expand the research into pediatric hearts, taking advantage of Washington University's leading pediatric heart transplant program to learn more about pediatric physiology.

Funding for this research was provided by the National Institutes of Health (R01-HL114395) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (R-01-HL085369).

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Jan. 23, 2013 A new study from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is the first to report that high blood calcium levels might predict ovarian cancer, the most fatal of the gynecologic cancers.

Lead author Gary G. Schwartz, Ph.D., a cancer epidemiologist at Wake Forest Baptist, and colleague, Halcyon G. Skinner, Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, examined associations between blood calcium and ovarian cancer in two national population-based groups. They found that women who were later diagnosed with ovarian cancer and women who later died of ovarian cancer had higher levels of calcium in blood than women who did not before their cancer diagnosis.

Schwartz, who is well-known for his epidemiologic research in prostate cancer, said the idea for this study came about because of published research from his group which showed that men whose calcium levels were higher than normal have an increased risk of fatal prostate cancer. That led him to wonder if a similar relationship were true of ovarian cancer.

"One approach to cancer biomarker discovery is to identify a factor that is differentially expressed in individuals with and without cancer and to examine that factor's ability to detect cancer in an independent sample of individuals," Schwartz said. "Everyone's got calcium and the body regulates it very tightly," Skinner added. "We know that some rare forms of ovarian cancer are associated with very high calcium, so it's worth considering whether more common ovarian cancers are associated with moderately high calcium."

The idea is plausible, Schwartz explained, because many ovarian cancers express increased levels of a protein, parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTRHrP), which is known to raise calcium levels in blood in many other cancers.

Ovarian cancer has a high fatality rate because it is hard to detect and by the time symptoms arise, the cancer is usually advanced. Schwartz said early diagnosis might be accomplished through the use of a calcium biomarker, but cautions that more research is needed to confirm these results. "We found the link between serum calcium and ovarian cancer; we confirmed it, and even though the study is small, we're reporting it because it's a very simple thing in theory to test."

The study is published online this month in the journal Gynecologic Oncology. The research was supported by the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.
