Christie and NVIDIA team up for an interactive car-buying experience powered by augmented reality (hands-on video)

Christie and NVIDIA team up for an interactive car buying experience powered by augmented reality handson video

If committing the requisite funds for an Audi R8 coupe seems like a stressful ordeal, NVIDIA and Christie have created an augmented reality purchase experience to lend a hand with the selection process. Under the hood, the whole lot is powered by NVIDIA GPUs, Christie projectors and RTT DeltaGen software for car configuration. Using a 3D-printed, one-fifth scale model of the R8, a series of projectors and projection tiles utilize a 3D WARP mesh to outfit the car with paint, wheels and even headlamps. A tablet UI then allows the eager customer to toggle colors, rim options, side panels and turn the lights on and off. In addition to customizing the car itself, the system also shows how the R8 will look in different environments, from dusk by the water to the rural open road. For a quick video demo from the SIGGRAPH show floor, join us after the break.

Nopi Is London's Best Restaurant

Burrata and orange ? a Nopi signature. Photo: Keiko Oikawa / Courtesy of Nopi

By Emily Fiffer for?Fathom?|?Nettles are prickly suckers. They yield to few men. After a recent trip to London and a meal at Nopi in Soho, I can say with certainty that one man ? lauded chef Yotam Ottolenghi (Plenty,?Jerusalem, Ottolenghi restaurants, Nopi, you know the drill) ? coaxes nettles the way I assume Jack Nicholson does women. Deftly, assertively, poetically. Until rendered powerless.

The softened stingers appeared in a sauce sopped up first by scallop, then fork, then finger. (I use digits in public sparingly. In this case, it was imperative.) So alluring was this sauce that I called over my server to crow about it, then asked for the recipe. ?It?s simple,? he said. ?Five ingredients.?

This is a love letter to?Nopi. This is passion, raw and unfettered, in the face of a chef whose food I have been cooking in my own kitchen, thanks to beautifully constructed tomes that are as fulfilling to read as they are to use. This is the moment I have been waiting for.

Nopi was everything I?d hoped it would be: a meal that tasted as if it were cooked by someone who understands exactly what makes my palate hum. Hearty at times, dainty at others ? Ottolenghi maintains the balance of an Olympic gymnast in the kitchen. Dish after dish offered acid, umami, uncanny seasoning, temperature play.

Olives ? simple! ? brightened by whole pink peppercorns caused a mild riot. Courgette fritters were flecked with manouri and fried into plump rounds; cool cardamom yogurt proved an apt companion. Dessert was fork-soft chocolate cake with plum ?soil.? I believe it hit 11 on the Richter scale.

I could go on, but what?s the use? I advise you, instead, to travel and taste for yourself.

Former Gophers TE Utecht awarded remainder of 2009 NFL salary

Ben Utecht's football career is still over. But there is a somewhat happy ending to it all, which included ups (a Super Bowl ring with the Colts in 2007) and downs (multiple concussions).

Utecht won his injury grievance case against the Cincinnati Bengals, an arbitrator ruled on Wednesday.

Utecht, the former Gophers football tight end from Hastings, sustained a career-ending concussion during training camp in 2009 while with the Bengals. He was released later that fall, and retired soon after.

From NFL.com:

"The arbitrator ruled Utecht should not have been cleared by the Bengals given that he "had not been sufficiently tested, both in his aerobic and strength reconditioning program, nor had he been tested in sport-specific activities, which would be a more accurate means of determining whether the damage caused by the concussion had 'cleared.'?"

The NFL Players Association filed an injury grievance and argued Utecht should have been paid his salary for the period of time he remained injured and unable to play as a result of the concussion.

"This decision upholds our players' rights to continued salary payments while injured and should provide important guidance for players and clubs in determining when it is appropriate to return to play after a player suffers a severe concussion," Tim English, the NFLPA attorney who handled Utecht's case, said in a statement released by the players' union.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello released the following statement: "The decision demonstrates that our collective bargaining agreements provide players with comprehensive remedies for football-related injuries, including injuries related to concussions."

Utecht, who still experiences concussion symptoms, sounded relieved that the dispute has come to a close.

"Three years later, my family and I have closure with the successful conclusion of my contract dispute," Utecht said in a statement released on his behalf by the NFLPA. "We are grateful for the support we have received from all of our friends in professional football and beyond. I will continue to help the NFL in any way I can to educate people about brain safety and the seriousness of this issue."

USA Today reported the remainder of Utecht's 2009 salary to be $926,471.

Use Craigslist's Grid View for an Infinitely Better Classifieds Search

Craigslist is a great place to find deals on just about anything, but its bare interface makes it difficult to root through. Its Grid View, however, is much easier, and all it takes is one click to turn it on.

Home-centric weblog Apartment Therapy has a great guide to buying and selling on Craigslist, and one of their tips was to use the image view instead of the default list view. I'm embarrassed to say that, despite the big "Grid View" button at the top of the page, I didn't know this even existed?and neither did a lot of commenters at Apartment Therapy. You used to need a fancy browser extension for an interface like this, but at some point Craigslist added it to the site themselves.

Check it out the next time you search Craigslist for a better browsing experience, and hit the link for more buying and selling tips.

Ortiz sets mark for hits by DH, Boston wins 11-4

SEATTLE (AP) ? As a younger player, Harold Baines and Edgar Martinez were among the hitters David Ortiz looked up to as examples.

So it's not lost on Ortiz that he has now passed both to become baseball's all-time leader in hits as a designated hitter.

"Wonderful hitters and when I first came up watching those guys," Ortiz said. "Now for your name to get mentioned next to theirs, it's a wonderful thing."

Ortiz doubled in his first at-bat to pass Baines for the most hits as a DH and hit a two-run homer an inning later, leading the Boston Red Sox to an 11-4 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

Ortiz entered the night tied with Baines with 1,688 hits as a DH, and was acknowledged by a standing ovation from the mix of Red Sox and Mariners fans when he doubled to left-center field to lead off the second inning.

An inning later, Ortiz collected his eighth hit of the series with a two-run homer off Seattle starter Aaron Harang (4-8), his 19th this season.

"There is nothing that guy does that amazes me. He goes out there every day and is so consistent that you almost expect it. You kind of feel bad whenever he goes 0 for 4 and you're like, 'Come on man, are you kidding me?'" Boston catcher Jared Saltalamacchia said. "But that's how good he is and how consistent he's been in his career."

Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, currently the best in baseball, and the Red Sox knocked around Harang for seven runs and eight hits.

Ortiz appeared touched by the ovation as he rumbled into second with the standup double. He tipped his helmet twice toward the standing fans and patting his chest as his milestone was shown on the video board. Ortiz already held the marks for the most runs scored, doubles, home runs, extra-base hits and RBIs by a designated hitter.

"The fans, they looked forward to that. They look forward to watch guys breaking records and getting to a certain level," Ortiz said. "They really appreciated it."

Ortiz scored in the second on Saltalamacchia's sacrifice fly, then provided the big blow in the third with a two-out, two-run homer to right-center field, his second straight game going deep.

"I've seen too much of him over the years," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "He is about as professional a hitter as you can be. Still has the bat speed, still has the power, commands the strike zone as good as anybody in the game."

Boston broke the game open in the sixth and knocked out Harang after singles by Jose Iglesias and Brock Holt to open the inning. Ellsbury and Shane Victorino both had RBI singles in the four-run inning that was helped along by a throwing error from Seattle shortstop Brad Miller.

After Seattle held a 5-1 lead after two innings in Tuesday's game, the Red Sox have outscored the Mariners 21-7 in the following 16 innings.

Ortiz's milestone night overshadowed one of the best starts this season by Boston's Felix Doubront. With its bullpen taxed in the opening two games of the series, Doubront (6-3) provided the outing Boston needed to give its relievers a rest.

Doubront took a shutout into the seventh and silenced a Seattle offense that scored 19 runs against Boston pitching in the first two games of the series. He allowed only a pair of early singles, and a double to Michael Saunders ? the first Seattle batter to reach second base ? in the fifth.

Seattle finally got to Doubront in the seventh when Jason Bay led off with a double and scored on Henry Blanco's two-out single. But that was the extent of Seattle's offense against the lefty. Doubront won his second straight start after going more than a month without a victory. It was the third time this season Doubront has allowed one earned run or less, and just the second time he's finished seven innings.

Doubront struck out six and walked two.

"We'll take a strong outing off a starting pitcher every night that we walk in here," Boston manager John Farrell said. "I think the biggest thing is he continued to put up zeroes after we scored runs and that kept the momentum on our side."

Notes: Seattle SS Brendan Ryan led off the eighth with a solo homer off Boston's Brandon Workman, making his major league debut. Seattle scored three times in the inning. ... Ellsbury returned after missing the first two games of the series with a sore wrist. ... Seattle RHP Stephen Pryor (60-day DL, lat muscle), threw a 25-pitch simulated game on Wednesday and will do the same on Saturday. Wedge said OFs Michael Morse (quad) and Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) are not yet ready to go out on rehab assignments. ... Farrell said RHP Alex Wilson, placed on the 15-day DL Tuesday, has joint inflammation in his thumb, but the injury is not as serious as first believed.

Infiniti has delayed the introduction of the 2014 Q50 sedan this summer to make last-minute engineering changes.

The Q50, the replacement for the G37, was scheduled to go on sale in early July, Infiniti said June 25 in announcing final pricing.

But U.S. deliveries of the Q50 will now begin Aug. 5, Infiniti said Monday.

?We are using this time to complete pre-delivery inspections and preparing the cars with the latest updates and final software before they go on sale by Aug. 5,? an Infiniti spokeswoman told Automotive News. ?While this may be a slight delay, we are making sure this is a very successful launch.?

Infiniti provided no specifics on the engineering and software updates.

The G series, available as a sedan, coupe and coupe convertible, is Infiniti's top-selling model line. It last received a makeover for the 2007 model year.

Like the G, the Q50 is assembled in Japan and is expected to become Infiniti's volume model in the United States.

This year through June, U.S. sales of compact luxury cars are up 17 percent, easily outpacing the overall market's 8 percent rise.

But the segment -- dominated by the BMW 3 series, Mercedes-Benz C class, and Lexus ES -- has also become more competitive with the introduction of the Cadillac ATS and latest Volvo S60.

Last month, Infiniti G sales fell 10 percent from June 2012, to 4,730. For the year through June, G sales have dropped 16 percent. In 2012, G series volume rose 3 percent to 59,844 compared with 58,246 in 2011.

This year through June, Infiniti's U.S. sales dropped 4 percent to 52,233 from the first six months of 2012. Sales last month declined 13 percent to 9,114.

Base pricing for the Q50 was set in June at $37,605 for the 3.7-liter V-6 model and $44,855 for the premium 3.5-liter hybrid model, including shipping.

The base Q50 is priced $650 below the 2013 G37's sticker of $38,255, including $905 for shipping, according to Infiniti's Web site.

The Q50's presale program, unveiled at the 2013 New York auto show, closed June 30 with 3,650 orders placed, Infiniti said. The preorder price for the Q50 was $37,355 for the base model and $44,605 for the hybrid version, including shipping.

"The Infiniti Q50 presale exceeded all expectations, becoming the most successful such program in Infiniti history," Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti Americas, said in a statement.

The base Q50 will keep the G37's 328-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 with seven-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid will have a 3.5-liter V-6 with a 50 kW electric motor that generates 360 hp.

The unique properties of graphene such as its incredible strength and, at the same time, its little weight have raised high expectations in modern material science. Graphene, a two-dimensional crystal of carbon atoms packed in a honeycomb structure, has been in the focus of intensive research which led to a Nobel Prize of Physics in 2010. One major challenge is to successfully integrate graphene into the established metal-silicide technology. Scientists from the University of Vienna and their co-workers from research institutes in Germany and Russia have succeeded in fabricating a novel structure of high-quality metal silicides all nicely covered and protected underneath a graphene layer. These two-dimensional sheets are as thin as single atoms.

Following Einstein's footsteps

In order to uncover the basic properties of the new structure the scientists need to resort to powerful measurement techniques based on one of Einstein's brilliant discoveries the photoelectric effect. When a light particle interacts with a material it can transfer all its energy to an electron inside that material. If the energy of the light is sufficiently large, the electron acquires enough energy to escape from the material. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) enables the scientists to extract valuable information on the electronic properties of the material by determining the angle under which the electrons escape from the material. "Single-atom thick layers and hybrid materials made thereof allow us to study a wealth of novel electronic phenomena and continue to fascinate the community of material scientists. The ARPES method plays a key role in these endeavours", say Alexander Grueneis and Nikolay Verbitskiy, members of the Electronic Properties of Materials Group at the University of Vienna and co-authors of the study.

Graphene keeping its head up high

The graphene-capped silicides under investigation are reliably protected against oxidation and can cover a wide range of electronic materials and device applications. Most importantly, the graphene layer itself barely interacts with the silicides underneath and the unique properties of graphene are widely preserved. The work of the research team, therefore, promises a clever way to incorporate graphene with existing metal silicide technology which finds a wide range of applications in semiconductor devices, spintronics, photovoltaics and thermoelectrics.
