Infiniti has delayed the introduction of the 2014 Q50 sedan this summer to make last-minute engineering changes.

The Q50, the replacement for the G37, was scheduled to go on sale in early July, Infiniti said June 25 in announcing final pricing.

But U.S. deliveries of the Q50 will now begin Aug. 5, Infiniti said Monday.

?We are using this time to complete pre-delivery inspections and preparing the cars with the latest updates and final software before they go on sale by Aug. 5,? an Infiniti spokeswoman told Automotive News. ?While this may be a slight delay, we are making sure this is a very successful launch.?

Infiniti provided no specifics on the engineering and software updates.

The G series, available as a sedan, coupe and coupe convertible, is Infiniti's top-selling model line. It last received a makeover for the 2007 model year.

Like the G, the Q50 is assembled in Japan and is expected to become Infiniti's volume model in the United States.

This year through June, U.S. sales of compact luxury cars are up 17 percent, easily outpacing the overall market's 8 percent rise.

But the segment -- dominated by the BMW 3 series, Mercedes-Benz C class, and Lexus ES -- has also become more competitive with the introduction of the Cadillac ATS and latest Volvo S60.

Last month, Infiniti G sales fell 10 percent from June 2012, to 4,730. For the year through June, G sales have dropped 16 percent. In 2012, G series volume rose 3 percent to 59,844 compared with 58,246 in 2011.

This year through June, Infiniti's U.S. sales dropped 4 percent to 52,233 from the first six months of 2012. Sales last month declined 13 percent to 9,114.

Base pricing for the Q50 was set in June at $37,605 for the 3.7-liter V-6 model and $44,855 for the premium 3.5-liter hybrid model, including shipping.

The base Q50 is priced $650 below the 2013 G37's sticker of $38,255, including $905 for shipping, according to Infiniti's Web site.

The Q50's presale program, unveiled at the 2013 New York auto show, closed June 30 with 3,650 orders placed, Infiniti said. The preorder price for the Q50 was $37,355 for the base model and $44,605 for the hybrid version, including shipping.

"The Infiniti Q50 presale exceeded all expectations, becoming the most successful such program in Infiniti history," Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti Americas, said in a statement.

The base Q50 will keep the G37's 328-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 with seven-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid will have a 3.5-liter V-6 with a 50 kW electric motor that generates 360 hp.
