2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M

Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel headlines the 2013 NFL Draft class at his position and is widely considered the top prospect of all.

He has plenty of experience blocking for high-profile quarterbacks, such as 2012 first-round pick Ryan Tannehill (Miami Dolphins) and the latest Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Manziel.

Strengths

  • Extremely durable and experienced for a junior - 37 career starts

  • Ideal build for the position (6-foot-6, 310 pounds)

  • Impressive ability to recover if he is initially beaten off the line

  • Quick feet and laterally agile

  • Great knee bend for his size

  • Heady blocker - recognizes defensive schemes and responds accordingly

  • Technically sound

  • Efficient blocker at the second level and downfield

  • Good character and well-respected teammate

Weaknesses

  • Occasional sloppy hand work

  • Could be a little more aggressive at times

  • May have benefitted from defensive ends having to play containment against the Aggies' mobile passers

  • While experienced and ready for the NFL, perhaps one more year in college could have taken him to a new level

Expected draft placement

An elite player at a premium position garners a lot of attention in the NFL Draft, and Joeckel will be no different as a prospect. He has all of the makings of a decade-long All-Pro in the NFL.

Depending on what the Kansas City Chiefs do with Branden Albert as a free agent, Joeckel could go as high as No. 1 overall. It is highly unlikely that he falls past the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 4.
